This article made me reflect on my life and realize that I have played the game, and as much as I would love to say I have not, this is not true. I did not start to play this “game” until high school. It started my sophomore and junior year of high school in the classes that I did not find as important or relevant, I would play this “game” without even realizing. I would sit in class and go through the motions of taking notes and asking questions when appropriate. When reading the article and reflecting on my life, I found the section about the after-school elementary school program very interesting. To see that elementary students are starting this “game” at such a young age is mind-blowing. Throughout elementary and middle school I would have never thought to take the easy way out. To hear about elementary students who are taking the easy way out of reading Winnie the Pooh makes me sad. This game is starting at such a young age and, for me, wanting to go into the education field it scares me that these young kids are already finding ways to avoid learning all the material. In my life, there are some days that I just need to play the game. Those days when you wake up and know it is going to be a rough day, I would go through the day playing the game in every class. This was rare for me though. Most of the time, I would just play the game in certain classes. In the classes that I would play the game in, if you asked me information about it now, I would have no idea. When playing the game I feel like I never really retain the information, but instead remember it for a short time and then forget the information. I will sit in classes and just go through the motions and then just memorize the information when it came time to take the test. Many teachers in high school stopped using creativity to teach students, but instead would just read from Power Points and expect students to write down notes. It was difficult to really focus because they were just reading what I could easily read myself. This game relates to our discussions about the Rhode Island state testing because if it continues to be a requirement to graduate, teachers are going to focus their curriculum on teaching to the test. The information will not be presented in a creative way, therefore more students will be inclined to play this game of school.
